REFLEXOLOGY

Reflexology is a massage therapy, applying firm pressure to the relevant 'reflex points', usually on the feet, but sometimes the same principles are applied to the hands or the ears. The healing power of foot massage can be traced back for thousands of years to the ancient civilisations of Africa, China, India, and the Egyptians. It is understood to have been 'rediscovered' in the West in the USA 1915 by ENT surgeon Dr. William Fitzgerald, who was intrigued by his discovery that he could carry our minor surgery without painkillers if pressure was applied to certain points on the feet or the hands. He concluded that each zone had its own bio-electrical energy which travelled to the brain along meridians from the toes and fingers. From these modern beginnings, others developed a holistic therapy, in which the feet are viewed as being very detailed 'zone maps' representing the whole body.
In the field of energy meridian healing, the theory has some similarities to acupuncture, acupressure, and emotional freedom technique. Despite the lack, so far, of 'scientific' proof, the Reflexologist is gaining recognition and acceptance amongst health professionals, as a complementary therapist. Successes have been reported in treating tiredness, migraine, colds, catarrh, influenza and sinus problems, skin complaints, hormone imbalance, PMS, asthma and other breathing disorders, constipation, digestive, IBS, circulatory problems, shingles, back pain, sciatica, and arthritis, as well as helping to relieve tension, stress and anxiety. A course of regular treatment is generally considered to be the best approach.

These Reflexology charts show the position of the reflexes on the feet and the parts of the body they relate to. With foot reflexology your left foot will relate physically to the left side of the body and the right foot will relate physically to the right side ofthe body.
