"REIKI (REI = soul / spirit / universal life force KI = air / breath / life energy)"
Reiki is one of the best known natural healing techniques with roots dating back over thousands of years before its revival in Japan in the early 1900s. The therapy is based on the traditional Eastern concept of our having a universal life force known as Ki (Chi) running through our bodies, in parallel with our circulatory and nervous systems.
Since our physical, mental and emotional well-being are all seen as dependent on our energy vibrations remaining in harmony with the universe, Reiki tells us that any disruption in this balance, even through our thoughts, emotions and memories, will cause problems. Although modern medicine may still be sceptical about the whole idea of a mysterious all-embracing energy as unscientific, the very latest advances in the realms of Quantum Physics are pointing in the same direction. So perhaps the healing wisdom of the East contained all the knowledge we have yet to "scientifically" discover for ourselves in the West?
Reiki healing may be simply described as ’laying on hands’, although actual physical contact is not necessary. Procedures will vary but the areas covered are typically the head, shoulders, stomach and feet. The patient remains fully clothed, and may be lying down, seated or standing. While the practitioner focuses on the purpose of the healing, the Reiki energy, it is believed, is being automatically channelled through the therapist to the patient, flowing to wherever it is needed in the body. It is like recharging one’s batteries with positive energy. Although the process is believed to be guided by a universal and infinite Higher Intelligence, so in that sense it is spiritual, no particular religious conviction is required. All you really need is an open mind.
Who can benefit? Everyone, it seems, and, because the same Ki is in every living thing, even animals and plants may be treated!
Does it work? Reiki should not be regarded as a ‘cure’ in itself, but rather a means of energising the body’s own healing processes. It has been used to successfully worldwide to help with many human conditions, including anxiety, depression, insomnia, PMT, as well as back pain, sciatica, arthritis, stomach problems, allergies, skin complaints, migraine, and pain relief generally. In some cases serious conditions appear to have responded well. The UK-based Reiki Research Foundation http://www.reikiresearchfoundation.org ) is reporting some encouraging initial results in working with MS. and ME.
The skill to practise Reiki cannot be learnt from a book alone. It is transferred personally from a Reiki Master to a student by a process known as attunement, which is said to unlock the natural ability, so that thenceforward the healing energy will automatically flow from the hands.
As with any therapy, individual results for Reiki will vary. Many report feeling a glowing or tingling sensation during treatment and a radiant sense of well-being afterwards, but there are no known disadvantages so it does no harm to give it a try, alongside any other treatments, medication, psychotherapy, counselling etc. because, believe it or not, it might just work for you!

"HOW DOES REIKI HEAL?"
Not only are our bodies composed of physical elements such as bones, muscles, organs, nerves, arteries, glands etc; it also has a subtle energy system through which "life force energy" flows. This subtle energy system is composed of energy "bodies" which surround our physical body and assist us in processing thoughts and emotions. The energy bodies have energy centres called chakras. The chakras act like valves, allowing life force energy to circulate through the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies.
Our body also has energy meridians and nadis which are like rivers or streams, carrying our life force energy throughout our physical body to both nourish us and to assist in balancing our body's systems and functions.
Our physical body is alive because of the "life force energy" flowing through it. If this life force energy is low or blocked, we are more likely to get sick, but if it is high and free flowing, we maintain health and a feeling of well being more easily.
Stress is a major cause of disruption and weakening in the flow of the life force energy. Stress is often caused by conflicting thoughts and feelings such as worry, fear, doubt, anger, anxiety, etc. which get lodged or stuck in our subtle energy system. Medical research has shown that continual stress can block the body's natural ability to repair, regenerate and protect itself. In fact, the American Institute of Stress estimates that 75% - 95% of all visits to the doctor are the results of reaction to stress. The effects of unreleased stress can range from minor aches to major health concerns such as heart disease, digestive disorders, respiratory and skin problems.
By creating a state of deep relaxation, Reiki aids the body in releasing stress and tension, thereby promoting healing and health. Reiki restores energy balance and vitality by relieving the physical and emotional effects of unreleased stress. It gently and effectively opens blocked meridians, chakras and nadis and clears the energy bodies, leaving one feeling totally relaxed and at peace.
Reiki is powerful, yet wonderfully gentle and nurturing, treating the person's physical body, emotions, mind and spirit as a whole. Reiki ican be used without fear of any side-effects or overdose. Reiki is a support to the body and a complimentary therapy and therefore works in conjunction with and as an adjunct to other forms of treatment and therapy.
"WHAT HAPPENS DURING A REIKI SESSION?"
A Reiki Session is normally carried out with the client either lying down or sitting, in a comfortable and peaceful environment.A Reiki treatment is safe, non-intrusive and non-manipulative. There are no substances applied to the body, and the recipient remains fully clothed. The practitioner places their hands on or over the body. During a full Reiki treatment, the practitioner directs healing energy to several areas of the head, the upper body (from neck to pelvic area), and the back (from shoulders to tailbone). While focus is given to the body's major organs, every cell of the body will benefit. In addition to the formal positions, Reiki can be applied to any part of the body which has been injured. Reiki works through bandages and casts, and can even be transmitted at a distance. Length of treatment depends upon the root cause of the problem and the amount of energy needed to revitalise and bring into balance the ailing area of the body. The client's body automatically draws in only as much Reiki as is needed, using it in whatever way is most appropriate at that time.
Reiki may be felt as a flow of energy, mild tingling, warmth, coolness, other sensations or not at all. It is deeply relaxing, eases stress and leaves one feeling calm and and at peace.
After the Reiki treatment it is beneficial to rest for a while and drink plenty of fresh water which will help the body to detox.
Listen to your body, if you feel tired - rest.
Reiki works in conjunction with and as an adjunct to medical and non-medical treatment and therapy. Reiki does not take the place of conventional medicine.
The experience of a Reiki treatment is usually a deep feeling of warmth, well being, comfort and total relaxation.
"THE SCIENCE BEHIND REIKI"
Independent research by Dr Robert Becker and Dr John Zimmerman during the 1980's investigated what happens whilst people practice therapies like Reiki. They found that not only do the brain wave patterns of practitioner and receiver become synchronised in the alpha state, characteristic of deep relaxation and meditation, but they pulse in unison with the earth's magnetic field, known as the Schuman Resonance. During these moments, the biomagnetic field of the practitioners' hands is at least 1000 times greater than normal, and not as a result of internal body current.
Toni Bunnell (1997) suggests that the linking of energy fields between practitioner and earth allows the practitioner to draw on the 'infinite energy source' or 'universal energy field' via the Schuman Resonance. Prof Paul Davies and Dr John Gribben in The Matter Myth (1991), discuss the quantum physics view of a 'living universe' in which everything is connected in a 'living web of interdependence'. All of this supports the subjective experience of 'oneness' and 'expanded consciousness' related by those who regularly receive or self-treat with Reiki.
Zimmerman (1990) in the USA and Seto (1992) in Japan further investigated the large pulsating biomagnetic field that is emitted from the hands of energy practitioners whilst they work. They discovered that the pulses are in the same frequencies as brain waves, and sweep up and down from 0.3 - 30 Hz, focusing mostly in 7 - 8 Hz, Alpha state. Independent medical research has shown that this range of frequencies will stimulate healing in the body, with specific frequencies being suitable for different tissues. For example, 2 Hz encourages nerve regeneration, 7 Hz bone growth, 10Hz ligament mending, and 15 Hz capillary formation. Physiotherapy equipment based on these principles has been designed to aid soft tissue regeneration, and ultra sound technology is commonly used to clear clogged arteries and disintegrate kidney stones. Also, it has been known for many years that placing an electrical coil around a fracture that refuses to mend will stimulate bone growth and repair.
Becker explains that 'brain waves' are not confined to the brain, but travel throughout the body via the perineural system, the sheaths of connective tissue surrounding all nerves. During a treatment, these waves begin as relatively weak pulses in the thalamus of the practitioner's brain, and gather cumulative strength as they flow to the peripheral nerves of the body, including the hands. The same effect is mirrored in the person receiving treatment, and Becker suggests that it is this system, more than any other, that regulates injury repair and system rebalance.
