ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture is one of the oldest recorded forms of medicine, having been used in China for more than 3,000 years. Eastern traditional theory is that our body has an energy system, a network of channels known as Meridians, through which, in good health, the life force Qi is flowing freely. Where health problems arise in body or mind this is viewed as a blockage or disruption in the energy system. The aim in acupuncture is to clear that blockage and restore the natural balance, by the painless application of fine needles at strategic points.
Scientific research has not so far been able to prove the existence of the energy system, but, whatever the explanation, there is no doubt that acupuncture has shown good results for many patients, including cases where conventional medicine had been unable to produce a remedy. Some studies have indicated a 70% success rate in pain relief, and one theory is that the process may be stimulating the brain via the nervous system to release endorphins, as the body's natural pain relievers, as well as anti-inflammatory agents and Serotonin to promote a sense of well-being. As with all forms of complementary therapy, acupuncture will not work for everyone, nor will every condition respond, but its success does not seem to be dependent on the patient's own belief, so complete sceptics may still, to their surprise, experience relief. The effects of acupuncture tend to be cumulative, so a course of regular treatment may be advised for best results.
Applications of Acupuncture - The NHS library at http://cks.library.nhs.uk/ reports as follows:
"Studies have shown that acupuncture is most effective in helping ease the symptoms of the following conditions: migraine, headache, dental pain, neck pain, chronic (long-lasting) back pain, post-operative pain, and nausea (particularly chemotherapy-induced nausea)."
